Operation Respect is one of the eight organizations providing contracted SEL services for New York City middle and high schools. We are also one of the four organizations that delivers the Respect for All workshops for RFA liaisons throughout NYC as well as bullying prevention workshops for all of New York City’s public schools for the past 12 years.
I would like to introduce myself and our lead facilitators, Marcy May and Edwin Figueroa. They are former leaders of the Bronx-based EARS organization which specialized in conflict resolution and peer mediation. Both Marcy and Edwin have been working with Operation Respect for more than five years. Together we offer a range of services aligned with the SEL funding allocation in your 2018-2019 budget.
I am the Director of Education of Operation Respect. I was a NYC school principal for 20 years, 13 years as founding principal of Bronx Regional High School, a transfer school for 350 students, and 8 years as the founding principal of a New Visions 6th through 12th grade school in Manhattan.
Our core belief is that school climate and culture—including social and emotional learning— are key to student academic success for all. How we do this work is my passion. I’ve traveled the world with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, and worked extensively in New York City schools with our facilitators to strategically offer what schools need through a range of trainings, workshops, classroom activities, assembly programs, and coaching. We can focus on peer mediation, restorative practices, racial equity, LGBTQ awareness, and student leadership and empowerment. With this funding we can create a plan with you of full and half-day sessions to introduce and implement an SEL-oriented approach that will be attainable and sustainable for your school.
